PLAYING AND MAKING

I am Tullio Granatello, builder of drums, lover of music.

And, this is my little story:

I began to play drum in 1966, a wonderful long-life experience. I moved the first steps in the traditional italian music, then in the '70s came the wave of the rock and i jumped in it. In the ' 80s I approached the pop and jazz italian panorama.

1983: The TAMBURO line of drums is born. At the time I was a “gigging” drummer, with a deep interest in building instruments, eventually this lead me to becoming a forerunner in my field.

1984: Presented a public exhibition of “Original” drum sets; built using a stave method, with solid timber lengths (like a barrel)—they were the first in the world.

1989: The “Nuova” model is released—also constructed using the stave method but with various thin layers of wood compressed together.

1990: The “Linea” model is released—the first drums to have a mutlisided frame made from thin layers of beech wood.

1992: The “Opera” model is released—the perfect synthesis and evolution of the preceding models.

1994: The “Studio” model is released—the first Tamburo drum set of a traditional concept using a cylindrical shell.

1997-2005: These years saw a beneficial collaboration with Proel Inc. Making the Tamburo products more visible and accessable to the market.

2006-Present: My character still remains that of an artisan, desiring to be both present and hands on, with each part of the production process. I strongly felt the necessity to rediscover an athmosphere that supported the most creative of ideas. With this I took a “back to basics” approach, starting with the resizing of my workshop from a factory to a small laboratory, a place that is more private and in the shadows, a place where surrounding industries and their know how could better support the needs of my innovations.

And then, while working towards my realizations for the next revolutionary project, I came up with the ideas and concepts for the new Volume line of drums, snares, percussions and hardware. They are instruments and articles made with detailed attention, supported by 25 years of experience. You just have to try it to believe it.
